Be safe online

  • Use strong passwords. Strong passwords are at least eight characters and contain a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Strong passwords do not contain any complete word, your user ID, or any part of your name or your company name. Each time you change your password, choose one that is significantly different from any previous password. Never use the same password that you use for other online accounts. For more information about creating strong passwords, see Password guidelines and tips.
  • Install antivirus programs and apps on your computers and mobile devices. Antivirus software and apps can detect viruses and malware (malicious software) on your computers and mobile devices. After installing antivirus software, set it to automatically download updates and to scan for malware and infected files on a regular basis.
  • Update your operating system and internet browsers. Application providers release security updates to protect your computers and mobile devices. These updates help to protect your computers and devices from viruses and malicious software.
  • Beware of suspicious email messages (phishing emails) and websites. Do not open email messages from people you do not know, and do not open attachments you were not expecting. When you download apps and other files from the internet, make sure you recognize the publisher.
